Warning,
Full Frontal Nudity on this page and definitely in the PDF files.

1976
to 1985
Over 180 issues |
Founded in January of 1976 by Richard Kavanaugh, Cruise Magazine was a part of Cavco Inc. Early on Robert Swinden was listed as a photographer and by September 1977 the masthead listed Swinden as President, with Kavanaugh as Editor. Swinden may have been responsible for the policy of featuring full frontal nudity almost from the beginning. Also from the start this "bar rag" featured thorough coverage of not just the Atlanta clubs but also for the entire South Eastern region, and into Texas. Over the years there were several formats and sizes, with most of the early ones being 5x8 1/2" before jumping to mostly 8 1/2x11 by 1978, apparently going for a more national market. |
Thanks
to the University of Houston Special LGBT Collections area for the loan
of many of these, they made this page possible.

Yes, the issue numbering above is confusing....they used just numbers for a while, with some publication gaps (how long?) and then came back in 1982 with a holiday cover, and a year later had "Spring" and as Volume 7-2. And....What happened in 1980 through 1982 that I have not happened upon? If you know, please advise. Also
by Jan 1982 the publishing credits changed to R&R Publishing, likely
for Robert Swinden and Rick Burroughs. |

that the large font logo "Cruise Weekly" changed to just "Cruise"...perhaps
at the end of Volume 7. Masthead information did not change.

Cruise
Variations
The Book of Maps apparently ran for several years. AND, Cruise was also produced in Washington DC and Detroit. Per Ted Retzloff: "According to my oral history interview with longtime publisher Tony Rome, Detroit's magazine began as a sibling of the Cruise published in Atlanta, was actually printed in Georgia when it started out and had to be shipped to Michigan. Rome soon bought the Detroit version outright and moved operations north. He retired in 1999, and sold it to a Chuck Thompson, who continued it until 2005." |
