Midnite Sun
534 Westhimer

1976 to 1985

Midnite Sun was known as a hustler bar, and therefore did not
garner much respect, but nine years in business is worth something.

But first, some pre-history...

It started as Second Sun, which was advertized in the very first issue of TWT.
And owner Glenn André right away opened a companion club, the Second Sun II,
at 6447 Richmond, at Hillcroft.

1975

Second Sun and Second Sun II

...and Second Sun II was not really mentioned again

1976

Paul Stewart (obit)

Paul Stewart was the owner of the popular bar Dirty Sally's,
and with the next two items the relationship becomes more clear.
He had already owned many bars in Houston and San Antonio,
including El Jardin and the Golden Nugget.

Dirty Sally's Second Sun

I am noting that since July there had been no more advertizing for Second Sun II

Finally, reopening as Midnite Sun...soon...

1976

Note that did apparently they did not convey the correct spelling of "Midnite" to the Montrose Star.

1977

Finally...

Upper right....was this the Real Cindy Birdsong, of the Supremes??
Probably, though it was Not the real Eartha Kitt, who was a local performer

Above, from 11/23/79, my favorite of their ads....evocative of the club,
looking younger than 18 and ready to negotiate...

Below, my photo, taken of the crowd outside the club during the Spring 1981 Westheimer Arts Festival

and I took this one down Westheimer, circa, 1981, looking East
Notice the Chicken Coop across the street, and Happy Buddah restaurant

Below, from a TIRR documentary, I believe during the 80 or 82 Pride Parade

above probably during Pride Parade 1981 or 1982

1983

From Numbers magazine, April 1983, .....NOT a rave review...
"Midnite Scum"....I never heard that one...
but indicative of the bar's reputation

I visited the club, very briefly, during my cross-country trip, in April 1981, and here's what I wrote...

there were very few ads run all year

1984

below left, a rare look at the staff

Mama Garcia was the mother of manager Louis Garcia

1985

And we are somehow back to spelling the name 'Midnight"....?

well, the bar closed by June, 1985
