Simpson's Dining Car
1413 Main Street
1940s - 1970s

Not a 'gay business' per se, but certainly
a popular one, in a cruisy area.

The 1970s gay travel magazine Ciao, regularly featured articles on gay life
around the world, with glossy photos of the bars, baths, etc. Houston was
included in the December 1974 issue (shown at left)

And, just for fun, an animated version of the photo,
done by Brett Buffalo, 9/25 LINK

Some artist liberties were obviously taken, ie, I doubt there was ever shrubbery...
and, where's the Woodrow Hotel?

and between Simpson's and the Woodrow Hotel was the Exile

And, an animated version of the Exile photo, per Brett Buffalo, 9/25, LINK

History Footnote!
This was roughly a few feet from the start of the 1976 Gay Pride Parade.
held with just a couple hundred people on June 20, 1976.
More info on that...
